Men's Skin & Wellness: Golf, Yard Work, and Sun Damage
What 20 summers outside does to your face, and what you can actually do about it.

Before You Read On
- Most of what people call “aging” on a man's face is actually sun damage, and sun damage behaves differently than aging, it can be improved.
- Golfers, gardeners, coaches, and anyone who spends summers outside tend to show it earlier: deeper lines, uneven tone, rough texture, and a leathery look on the sides of the face and neck.
- None of this is about vanity, some of it is worth a second look for your actual skin health, not just how you look.
- Most of the fixes here are simple, low-downtime, and don't require you to change how you spend your summers.
- Everything's done by Registered Nurses (RN/RPN), under the medical direction of Vijeta Singh, NP-PHC, MScN.
It's Not Age. It's the Sun.
If you've spent two decades of summers on a golf course, in the yard, coaching your kid's team, or just working outside, your face has probably taken on a look that reads as “older” than your actual age, and there's a good reason for that. The vast majority of what people call visible facial aging isn't caused by the passage of time on its own. It's caused by cumulative sun exposure, and it adds up fast when you're outside for hours at a stretch, year after year.
Here's the part that matters: sun damage and true aging aren't the same thing, and they don't respond the same way. Aging is slow and mostly out of your control. Sun damage is cumulative but it's also addressable, which means a lot of what's showing up on your face right now isn't permanent.
What Sun Damage Actually Looks Like
Uneven Tone and Sun Spots
Years of UV exposure trigger the skin to produce melanin unevenly, which shows up as brown spots or patches, most commonly across the cheeks, temples, forehead, and the backs of the hands. These are sometimes called “age spots,” but they're really sun spots, a direct record of exposure, not age.
Deeper Lines, in Different Places Than You'd Expect
Squinting into the sun for years builds deep lines around the eyes, and UV breaks down the collagen and elastin that normally keep skin smooth, so lines set in earlier and deeper than they would from expression alone.
Rough, Leathery Texture
Chronic sun exposure thickens the outer layer of skin as a defense mechanism, which is why the sides of the face, ears, and back of the neck on longtime outdoorsmen often feel noticeably rougher or more textured than the rest of the face.
Visible Blood Vessels and Redness
Sun exposure weakens the walls of small blood vessels near the skin's surface, which can lead to persistent redness or visible thread veins, especially across the nose and cheeks, something we see often in golfers.
One more thing worth mentioning: if you notice a spot that's new, changing shape or color, bleeding, or not healing, get it looked at by a physician or dermatologist. That's outside what we treat here, but it's the single most important thing to stay on top of after 20 summers in the sun.
What You Can Actually Do About It
Uneven Tone and Sun Spots
Medical-grade chemical peels, built around your specific skin using AlumierMD, can visibly fade sun spots and even out tone over a series of sessions. A well-chosen daily skincare routine, including a proper Canadian SPF, keeps new spots from forming while the old ones fade.
Deep Lines and Lost Structure
Biostimulators work by encouraging your own skin to rebuild collagen over time, which helps soften lines caused by UV-related collagen breakdown, not just expression. Anti-wrinkle injections remain useful for the lines around the eyes caused by decades of squinting.
Rough Texture
Microneedling, done with the Eclipse MicroPen EVO, creates controlled micro-injury that prompts the skin to rebuild smoother, more even texture. It's one of the most effective in-clinic options for skin that's gone rough or leathery from years of sun.
Overall Skin Quality
PRF and PRP use your own blood's growth factors to support overall skin repair and quality, and are often layered with the treatments above for a longtime outdoorsman looking for a broader refresh rather than one specific fix.
Going Forward
None of this is about staying off the golf course or out of the yard, it's about protecting the progress once you've made it. A daily mineral SPF, a hat when you can manage it, and reapplying sunscreen if you're out for more than a couple of hours will do more for you long-term than any single treatment. Everything above works best paired with that habit, not instead of it.

Is This Right for You?
A consultation makes sense if you:
- Have spent a lot of summers outside, golf, yard work, coaching, working outdoors, and it shows.
- Have noticed sun spots, rougher texture, or deeper lines than you'd expect for your age.
- Want to know what's actually treatable versus what's just part of getting older.
- Want a plan that doesn't mean giving up your summers outside.
Worth mentioning at your consultation:
- Any spots that are new, changing, or don't look like the others, we'll point you to a dermatologist if something needs a closer look.
- How much time you realistically spend in the sun, so your plan accounts for it.
- Any skincare or treatments you've already tried.
“A lot of guys assume what they're seeing is just age and there's nothing to be done. Most of the time, what we're actually looking at is sun damage, and that responds to treatment a lot better than age does.”
Our Registered Nurses (RN/RPN), under the medical direction of NP-PHC, MScN, will take an honest look at what's actually going on with your skin and tell you what's worth doing about it.
